Yesterday's race was a success and today, Monday, I'm taking off bc I have a track meet and a day off will be good. I checked out a couple blogs and cameo the realization of a few things: ain't no body really gives a cuss about blogs. A bit self glamor, yet fun to here about cool cuss, but in the large scheme, ain't no body gives a cuss... Yet it continues. Haha.
Tuesday - I was planning on taking next week easy, but with my schedule, this week is going to be down, intensity wise and mileage.
I hit the sap lines for 14 and felt great for the first time at the end of the run in a while. The weather was amazing and I felt connected to the Old Gods. Vibrant greens are an awesome motivator to get out the door.
Thursday - hustled to Ledge Rd with the idea of doing the Lost Trail then dropping into Grafton Ponds. It is an almost 2 hour run and 14... The Lost trail is covered in moss at the tops of the hills/mtns and it was soft and awesome to run on.
One of those days of thankfulness to be alive.
The run was great but I felt like a donkeys cuss sack. I've also been realizing that all of my runs are about 1 min per Nile slower than last year with last year feeling like superman on every run. Feeling like Robin isn't do bad, but sidekicking it ain't my thing, I want to be the superhero.
Friday - hailed the White Dot trail ending down the switchbacks, 9 miler. I couldn't believe that I felt as heavy as I did. Felt slow and lethargic but had a great moment on the run. When you crest the final climb before the switchbacks there is a mtn meadow amongst the trees. It looks straight out of a fairy tale and No matter how bad the run is going this sight always lifts the spirits.
Saturday - I'm kind of fretting and freaking out a bit about tomorrows race. I have no control over anyone else's training and I'm disappointed in myself that I'm being a cuss about it. It's a stepping stone but really want to have a good/great showing. I'll do what I do.
In preparation for the race I ventured to Grafton Ponds for an easy 5 miler. At no point was it easy though, I labored through 5 miles at 8-9 minute pace and felt like a dead animal carcass. Total death march. I wrote this blog write up in the river, waste deep, praying to the gods of water to replenish my legs. I hope it works. It certainly is cold enough and I can see snow still!
All in all, it's happening, just taking a lot longer than I can handle at times. I just need to remember that the universe won't give me anymore than I can handle.
Tomorrow will be a great field and very tough competition. I'll be fortunate and thankful to be in the mix. (not that anyone even gives a cuss!).

Brom Bones
Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race: USATF-NE MTN Championships.
I've been fretting and dissecting this race in my head all week leading into it. It's a tough course bc it favors fast runners and is not your typical "mountain" race.
I'm one to never lack confidence and I was incredibly interested to see where my fitness would leave me. Past weeks are sluggish and slow, not the best for wanting to run fast. My best saving grace is: I'm tough as cussing nails and want it more than anyone else.
The field was going to be incredibly competitive and my main goal was to be in the mix. Well, that's the right thing to say, so here's my real thought, "I want to win the cussing race, devour souls, use their spines as floss to rid their ravished particles from my teeth." But, it's so tough to say those things when the dudes I raced are the nicest people in New England if not the world.
Upon pulling into the parking lot, Eric (who I foolishly gave a ride) see immediately Double J's rig, and then I spot Brandon Newbould just beyond. Tough comp!
I'm a pure hater, it's what I do. It's impossible to hate on these guys and it always great to see them.
Having run the course last year (and yes, winning) I felt like I had an advantage. If only on my head, that's all I need. I had a race plan and was going to stick to it, and was set on it being enough to do what I dart out to do.
The course in a nutshell (great Alice in Chains jam!) first mile is rolling up to the top, then down for a mile, then up a long tough climb to 3 miles, then down to the start and 4 miles, then out a 2 mile lollipop with a gradual switchback hill to climb before screaming back to the finish. Around 6 miles total (+/-).
On the warm up I felt very good, almost too good, devil's grin good.
The start of the race was out quick, Eric MacKnight and Brandon went right to the front with me right behind them. Eric would continue to push up the first 500m of the climb and it looked like he was going to run away with it. Brandon covered this charge and I had to let them go, it was too hot for me. Upon creating the first climb to the rollers, I started to stride out and instantly caught them. My plan was to make a move right before the mile, which is right before the top. My move was to get to the top first them ravish the downhill like Haiti. I wanted to pound the pace like an elaborate gang handshake. Totally get wild and sprint. And this is what I did, it took me a bit to get around Brandon (and I took King of the Mountain honors just before the preme, which I was unaware of until after the race. I figured the King of the Mountain would be on the second climb. But, shouldn't the King of the Mountain be the winner of a Mountain race? Cuss yes! I felt a little bit like a Richard when I found out that I past 10 meters from the top, but I wasn't going to deviate from my race plan).
I was redlining the downhill and executed the plan well. By the second climb I had a nice gap. Phase two, get up the second climb without diving into oxygen debt, then punish the downhill again and get out of sight. Engaged and executed.
I continued to tell myself that they were right behind me an that I can't fall asleep. I didn't want to get run down. Coming by the start I knew I had a great opportunity to win if I could just keep it together the last 3k. I kept filling my head with positive affirmation, "bc I'm good enough, and tough enough, and doggonit, people like me..."
Total composure was lost, I had to dig and scrape to keep the needle pinned in the red. I really killed myself the last 3k. The pics tell it all. I also don't look as fit as I raced.
In a great field, I was very fortunate to come out with a W. I had a very good day and as it turned out, at 4 miles I had over a minute on second, and put an additional minute over the last 3k.
I'm very happy to have been by myself bc the race for second sounded tough. 4 guys switching spots over the last miles was something I'm glad I wasn't a part of.
We then hit Huntington Gorge to cleanse and shrink up our manhoods in its frosty waterfall river. It was a great day to be alive.
I included two color pics from this year (painful) and a suave mother cusser from last year. What a physical difference.
(+/-) 10k: 38:17 course record, King of the Mountain, King of Pain, King of VT and The Last Hero and Only Hope...

Bearheart
Woke up alert and ready to be awake, so that was nice compared to the everyday sluggish feeling I have during the week. The plan: wake up, eat, pick Najem up, drive to Wolfboro, complete a tough 14 mile trail race, come home.
Seemed simple enough.
This would be Najem's first trail race. Haha. We were going to meet up with fellow BAA teammate Jim Johnson and I was hoping on hearing what his Rae strategy would be. Najem and I discussed on the ride up and we both had good plans. Najem's was to sit and check things out, while mine was very similar, but hang as long as I could an be competitive. Jim wanted to work together and take it to Justin Freeman.
This idea was fine by me, it was just figuring out what that would literally be. Finalizing a plan is tough for me, but I settled on hanging with the front as long as I could and if oddly good, try and make a move.
This plan was instantly aborted the first step of the race. Doing what I do best (flying by the seat of my pants) I went with an old playbook option: get out of site early; they can't see you, they can't catch you and hammer!
This really was a better option anyways. Current fitness and lack of racing lead me to just kill myself and make it a quality effort day. And that's what I did.
I took the lead an never gave it up and just pushed every step I could. I went out to pound that course like an elaborate gang handshake. The course fought back an was very tough. The mud was deep and was very tough. I was zigging and zagging all over the trail trying to find the best line and best footing. All while telling myself, "they are going to catch you, don't fall asleep, keep redlining, keep pushing..."
There were two righteous climbs with long gradual downhills to follow, which I tried to sprint when I could. This tactic lead to me being very tired the last two (insanely muddy unrunnable two miles) and having to thrash and fight through the trail.
I was fortunate to hang on and secure the win.

Debt Owed
Finished up last week with a 15 miler in Keene with my fellow owls, to give me 95 miles for the week. Very cool. We ran what was once called the Abenaki Run. Great conversations with all in the group and it was exciting to hear how well they are all racing. Tradition.
This week brought highs and lows for feeling good while running but def had solid efforts.
Tuesday - 4 x Hartley Hill (little over a mile up) with Najem. Last week I felt awesome, but this week I was a little sluggish. I attribute it to the fact that last week I was on vacation and this week I was back at school. The good things was the further into the repeats the better I was feeling. Once again we just ran regular effort up the hill for the first three then on the lat one picked it up slightly all the while feeling good. A solid 14 in the bag!
Wednesday - the weather was unreal and I was fresh out of a staff meeting, so I was in desperate need of some nature. I decided to nail the 14 mile Grafton power lines loop (which includes the infamous Satan's Grin hill). My goal was to go slow and just cover the distance, and that is exactly what I did. I wore my Highgear watch and my pace was slow early, but by the end I was in the low 7's/high 6 minute pace and that felt comfortable.
To run that pace on the hills and power lines, one would have to sell their soul to one of two people: the devil or me. I dobt need Strava to tell me who owns the FKT or who the King of the Mountains are; its cussing ME!
Thursday - today was a total nature run, tons of animals were out and about. I parked up on Ledge Rd and hustled the Lost Trail. About 10 minutes in my girl Lena goes ape cuss wild. She caught up to me with a face quilled up with 6-7 long quills. They came out real easy. Twenty minutes later, she is at it again, but this time the porcupine was cussin with her and not going up a tree. It was a decent size quiller and left about 5 tiny quills in her mouth... The fastest way back to the truck was to keep going. She seems fine, so I wasn't too worried. Twenty minutes after that we come up on a beaver pond and what looks like a beaver swimming in it. It wasn't, it was a good sized raccoon. Mama usually just chases them off the porch with a broom, but since this one was swimming, ain't no time for brooms.
Ellie and Lena were in that water like there was a fire. I didn't want my girls to kill this raccoon and I didn't want that raccoon to drown my girls, but it was straight out of a movie. The raccoon was scratching, biting and clawing and my girls were biting back. While my girls where paddling after it, the would push the raccoons head under water and it would swim (ver well too) and come up and start thrashing again.
During the malay, I yelling like a fool and I'd get one to listen before it turned into a wrestling tag team match. I finally get both by me and the raccoon swam under a rock and poked just it's nose out of the water to breath. Raccoons are def one smart animal.
Lena took a bite in the lip and a scratch across the face, Ellie was untouched (she's gnarly) and the raccoon had a good gash under one eye.
Great 10 miles with high excitement. I def don't lead a boring life...
Friday - after yesterday's Wild America run, I decided to chilled behind my place today on a mellow 9 miler on the white dot trail finishing down the switchbacks. The trails have some wet sections but overall they are in great condition.
Saturday - today is the day before the Muddy Moose 14 mile race so I wanted to keep it lighter than usual. I'm feeling the week and yesterday was a day I should have raced. Yesterday I felt amazing, and today I did everything to finish 7 miles atop Putney Mtn, great sign for tomorrow. Cuss.
I don't like the idea of losing let alone the idea of getting my cuss handed to me either, but I am remembering that it is for the greater cause. Tomorrow means nothing except for tomorrow and will be a solid race effort, quality race field and quality miles. I'm exiting to race and start racing more to get my sword sharp on both ends (mentally and physically). I recognize I'm not where I want to be but I'm thankful for where I am in my training and thankful I can be running. I can see where I want to be which is the first time in a long time.
Here comes some races, they may be ugly, but they will be fun...

L'homme Sauvage Wilder Mann Macidula
The primal heart still beats...
This was a tough week (health wise) and a good week of training. Greg and I talked about it the other day, running everyday an training are different. I feel in the verge of being able to train and not trying to sound like a cuss, but it's now or never bc I don't know how much time I have before I get sick.
I'm getting minor head fuzziness and some residual feelings in the health department. Boj said it best, "got to do what you can with the time you got," and if I'm going to get sick or sidelined again, , I'm going to go down in a blaze of fit glory... Haha.
Monday - Najem hustle out and had an awesome idea to do hill repeats on Hartley Hill (tough grueling 2 mile hill). We ran solid efforts on the mountainous part of about a mile section. The climbs are tough and it was great to complete a set of 3 climbs. Even running up the hill, it is wicked tough, so our efforts were great and relaxed.
Tuesday - since I'm on vacation this week I banged out an easy 9 miler in the morning around the abandoned apple orchard off Leach Rd. Felt very good the day after the hill repeats. In the afternoon I Voltroned with Greg in Pisgah for another 12 miles (or more) of fun. This was great bc I felt better on the second run...
Wednesday - I thought about going to Wednesday workout, but I tested my fitness level last week and don't need to do it every week (haha). But... it caught up with me and I feel like dog cuss. I also got told by the specialist Dr that I will need to go back on some meds for 90 days at 4 times a day... CUSS ME! There are worse things... I didn't have a lot in the tank and called the run after only 10 miles, my body was thankful.
Thursday - lethargy continues, and this sucks. I feel heavy, tired and weak. So, I decided to run a gnarly 14 miler out to the Athens Lookout. This run is tough with a lot of climbing and I felt this was the best way to stop feeling like a pansy. It worked to so e extent, I felt gnarly for completing, but def death marched portions. On the scales, I am 12 lbs heavier than this time last year. It is hard to gauge what fitness I'm in without any races, so I am going to find something and try to roll.
Friday - found a race in Brattleboro, 10k, and it will not be easy. Fyffe knows all the roads the course goes on and said it is wicked hilly and we did a course map on map my run and it is rolling up or half then and then rolling down for the second half.
In preparation for this race, I doubled today. The original plan was to double 10 and 5, but only shagged 5 in the morning and then teamed with Fyffe in Putney and rolled 5 with him. Very exciting that Fyffe is gearing back up.
Saturday - combining the last 7 days I have 104 miles, my highest since my summer of devastation. Knowing this 10k was going to be brutally tough and that I was going to kill myself on it was an enjoyable thought.
I ran a 33:03 for a very tough (arguably the hardest 10k I've ever done on the roads) and the most scenic. It was an amazing course that was very comparable to a trail/mountain race only on dirt roads.
There were points where I felt I resumed to training pace on some of the climbs and could only make up so much on the downhills. I was right around where I thought I'd be, which was nice. In 2 weeks and a year ago I raced at Groton 10k and ran a 33:15, and Groton was much easier with competition. Today I was by myself from the word "go" and much tougher, so this is a huge confidence booster.
I don't know how my clothes will fit if my confidence grows to be so fat!
Sunday should be a longer run with some lifers...

Deathly Hallows
Oh man... The last three weeks have been eventful, some for good and others for not, but def eventful. A solid three ago I was starting to settle into a good rhythm of running, but then my quad exploded on the marathon road with Najem. This was tough bc I lost somedays and the start up week that followed was bruised with feeling like a lard cuss of cuss cuss. It was a total cluster cuss.
So my last weeks were looking like: 81, 85, 82, 87, hog cuss, cuss discharge, and then last week ended up back at 80.
Last week was an awesome week of rolling. I had some epic fun runs. 80 miles with two days off is great.
I was feeling some fitness flowing in me so I wanted to test my fitness, so I hit the Keene to see where it was at.
The workout was 10 x Drummer Hill which runs like a 400m in time and is a great hill for repeats. The workout was light work as I was feeling fine. My health is the only hole, some days I feel great and other days I feel like cuss. But today's workout was a nice feeling. The times weren't anything outstanding, but the effort at which I was climbing was minimal and felt good and relaxed.
I then ended the week in Pisgah with a 3:18 hour run. Once again, I felt great the whole time and it was a solid bro day with Greg and the we Voltroned with Fyffe in Putney for a BBQ. Awesome week.
I got to get my cuss together if I want to compete in races and just finish them. The Burlington marathon might be a pain fest, but who better to take on pain then the King of Pain himself, ME!!!
So my last weeks were looking like: 81, 85, 82, 87, hog cuss, cuss discharge, and then last week ended up back at 80.
Last week was an awesome week of rolling. I had some epic fun runs. 80 miles with two days off is great.

BBoyz Makin the Freak Freak
The blog is a bit dusty but it's all good out here in the WILD... Been getting some quality treks in and been having super amounts of fun rolling, even though I'm rolling slow. If I can get my speed to catch up to Lloyd Christmas's rapist whit, I'll be as solid as last year.
The past three weeks have been great training weeks with the reintroduction of a steady long run. DHJones left me a but uneasy and I felt that the next month should be focused on solid training and focus of things to come. Bigger picture type cuss. So the last three weeks went as follows: 65, 81, and 81 for miles. I opened my big mouth and now it's time to defend my honor and show people what's real.
This past week has been a great week of training. 3/11-3/17
Monday - Thomas "what's in my Paquette" or "PaqMan" Paquette hustles out with Boj for a 10 miler before wings. It was great to see them and roll out. It is awesome the legacy of KSC runners and how we still run with each other and the decades our friendships cover. At wings that night there was Larry Legend Sayers from the 80's KSC squad, me and then Thomas. Very cool, very proud.
Tuesday - the weather was the runt of Romulus and totally sucked hind teat! I needed motivation and the universe sent me a message saying Greg needed it too, so I beamed a message to Greg to meet in Putney for a run and get us out the door in the nasty rain. We Voltroned at the covert culvert in Putney and hustled out an hour in the nastiness. It was a Neverland run, one run would be warm rain and the next road it would be Antarctic freezing. The plan was to loop one more road, but at an hour, the last road we were on, was colder than a polar bear colony, so we bailed for dry warm clothes and a pit stop at another hetero-lifemates house, Fyffe. the weather was like my last girlfriends attitude, ugly and lame, so it was great to cuss slap a run in it!
Wednesday - the weather was awesome, and mountain therapy was in the air. I zipped out to Magic Mtn for that therapy. The snow was a bit soft on top but overall the day was amazing. Rugged rugged rugged slopes. Very steep and unforgiving. Sportiva GTX's save the day and kept my feet dry and warm, wet cold feet are the worst.
Thursday - I hadn't run out in Grafton on the power lines in some time, so I made that my destination. With the temps dropping significantly, the trails were hard packed. The run was absolutely awesome. I felt I was in a dream state the whole time. The lighting was cussing with my eyes and my depth perception was cussed; it was bright but dark, then dark but bright... Timothy Leary would have loved it. It was tough to see any ice, and on a huge descend I slipped and was at the mercy of gravity and wicked percent grade. Slid for a while! Once I realized I was fine, I went back into bliss of being in nature and outside.
Friday - teamed up with another KSC owl and colleague, Tim Eno. We ran out on the Ledge Rd trails and took down a 5 mile loop. My first run with Tim this year and it was good to chat.
Saturday - Lifer Najem came out for the Marathon road 19 miler. Najem is just getting his swagger back and today was a huge step in awesomeness and long quality runs to come. Very cool. We just chilled and clocked 2:01 for the 19 road loop. It went by very fast with a lot of laughing (mostly me) and found out some things I didn't know. For instance; did you know that you can be suspended from high school for a single day? Yup. Want to know how? Just spit on a bitch... It's that easy. Who knew?! Also, Najem knows more about Judge Judy than a person should. Haha. Lastly, WAY TO GO PAQMAN! I heard she was piping HOT!!!
Sunday - took it easy on this glorious day and ran the Sap Lines 12 miler. Felt awesome! There was a ton of ice, but no slips or falls. I daydreamed for all of it about if I won 222 million... That would be epic, and had a ton of fun dreaming about all things I'd do, people I'd support, and places I'd go. Made for a beautiful run in the woods, bc most of my money spent would be on the places I was running through to keep them running trails and preserving nature.
